Beard Oils: The Truth About "Beard Growth Oils"

Does Beard Growth Oil Work?

After doing a bit of research about beard oil and what it can do for you, you start seeing the term “growth oil” being thrown around. Typically, when someone wants to get some beard oil, it’s because they’re looking to make their beard grow. You might start wondering what the difference is between a “normal” beard oil and a “growth oil”. Because I like giving away the ending at the start, the main difference is only in the wording. “Growth oil” is a buzzword. In order to understand this marketing scheme a bit better, let’s dive into the purpose of beard oil.

The purpose of beard oil

Beard oil for beard growth

In reality, there are two types of beard oil. One is more of a cosmetic product that works on the surface, and the other is more foundational and focused on skin care. Your goal is to grow your beard, not take care of your skin, you might think. We’ll break down why it’s so important to nourish your facial skin in the course of this article (spoiler: your beard grows out of your face, hence the importance of skin care).

Cosmetic

The first type of beard oil is the cosmetic beard oil. Typically, these oils contain cheaper ingredients and usually contain silicone. These are the low-cost oils you find all over the web, that seem very alluring because of their price. The reason why they cost so little is due to the ingredients they use. They’ll usually contain cheaper oils, sometimes even synthetic ones, and worst of all, silicone.

They’re cosmetic in the sense that they will help with styling your beard, usually by weighing it down. If your beard is left greasy after a use of a beard oil, you should question which ingredients are contained in that little bottle. Silicone is terrible for your beard because it will clog your pores, which can lead to zits, ingrown hairs, irritation, things you’re often trying to combat with an oil.

To go straight to the point, if you’re looking to make your beard grow, avoid these oils, they won’t help.

Skin care

The second type of beard oil is what you should be looking for. You want a beard oil which contains natural oils that will actively nourish, heal, and hydrate the skin and beard, which we’ll cover later in this article. In order for your beard follicles to operate to their full capacity, they need to be healthy and hydrated constantly. If not, your brain will start sending signals to the follicles to stop growing hair. Cosmetic beard oils won’t be able to address that at all.

When growing a beard, you’ll notice that you sometimes get ingrown hairs, zits, irritation, and dead skin that accumulates. That’s all very normal and can be effectively taken care of with the use of proper beard oil.

What makes a beard oil a “growth oil”?

Ah yes, the killer question. What DOES make a beard oil a growth oil?

Simply put, the ingredients.

A “growth oil” is one that has natural oils known for their beneficial properties to the skin and hair. Essentially, it’s a skin care oil. If you find a “growth oil” online that doesn’t specify the ingredients, ask yourself some questions.

In this light, our beard oils are “growth oils”. They only contain the highest quality ingredients to help with the issues that occur when growing a beard. If used daily, you’ll greatly reduce itchiness, dryness, and irritation. They get absorbed by your skin and hair very fast, leaving no greasy feeling. Let’s dive into the oils we use in our oil recipe, figuratively speaking.

Natural oils you should look for in a beard oil

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a widely used oil all over the cosmetics industry for its numerous benefits. It is a great moisturizer that gets easily absorbed by the skin pores to hydrate the skin in depth, and at the same time, helps dissolve hardened sebum lodged in your hair follicles. In the long run, that can affect your beard growth.

It also has many antibacterial/antifungal properties, making it ideal to eliminate certain bacteria in your beard that can cause acne and irritations.

Castor Oil

Castor oil for promoting beard growth

Castor oil is well-known for its hair growth promoting properties, due to the Omega-9 fatty acids it contains. It also stimulates blood flow, meaning that if you apply it to your facial skin, more nutrients will head to your hair follicles, and in turn help with growth.

Another great aspect of castor oil is its recinoleic acid content. This acid fights bacteria that cause acne and other skin related issues. Say goodbye to ingrown hairs!

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba is one of those top-of-the-line oils in terms of skin care. Not only does it hydrate the skin in depth, but it also helps to control oil excesses on your skin, prevents bacteria proliferation due to the iodine it contains, soothes irritation and rough skin, etc.

This is 100% an oil you have to look for in a beard oil.

Vitamin E

Along side jojoba oil, vitamin E is another of those natural oils that has tremendous benefits for the skin and hair. Many companies will choose not to use this oil due to its price, but it’s something you NEED if you want a truly effective “growth oil”.

Vitamin E oil is a great skin moisturizer, cleanser, and hair growth promoter. It treats damaged hair follicles and hair strands, from the tip to the root. Thanks to the antioxidants it contains, blood flow is stimulated to the regions it is applied on, which helps with growth.

Almond Oil

Plot twist, almond oil also contains vitamin E! Can’t get enough of that good stuff.

Almond oil is also known to help treat skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. It also dislodges dirt in the pores, softens and hydrates skin to reduce itchiness. Containing calcium and magnesium, this natural oil can help prevent hair loss.

Grapeseed Oil

Finally, grapeseed oil is another versatile oil that helps treat skin conditions, clean the skin, and maintain healthy hair. It balances the skin’s oil production, reduces acne breakouts and boosts blood circulation.

Final words about “Growth Oils”

In order for a beard oil to influence beard growth, it MUST contain natural oils that effectively help with skin care. If it doesn’t and it also contains silicone, you know it has nothing to do with growth, only with styling.

Your beard grows out of your face (duh!), so if your facial skin is extremely dry and neglected, you’ll see a slower growth with more complications, like ingrown hairs, irritation, split-ends, etc. If you want a nice beard, you'll need to take care of your skin.

Our oils contain these ingredients, and we chose them specifically for their benefits. Even if we don’t use the infamous buzzword, our oils ARE “growth oils”.

Stay Brave!
