Plague might be a bit strong, but we’ve all found ourselves scratching away at our beards in search of relief, but the itch keeps coming back. Why is my beard itchy?
Many things can cause your beard to feel itchy, which can even be out of your control, but typically, the itch is caused by things you can control.

The air during winter is much drier than the rest of the year, meaning that more moisture gets pulled from your skin, leaving your beard feeling very itchy and potentially even flaky. This is another factor that weighs in a lot. If you don’t wash your beard well, the bacteria and germs that are present from touching it through the day will proliferate if not dealt with. That means you’ll potentially get zits, ingrown hairs, rashes, all caused by poor maintenance. This is an easy fix, just get yourself a good beard shampoo (avoid sulfate) and wash away!
This is one of the most common reasons for beard itch. It’s important to understand that for a beard to be healthy, the skin itself must be healthy. Just to make sure this point gets across, repeat this mantra throughout the day (HEALTHY SKIN = HEALTHY BEARD). Other than washing your beard with a proper beard shampoo, as discussed above, it’s important to hydrate it with a high-quality beard oil. It will nourish your skin and help to deal with irritation, dryness, flakiness, etc.
Cheaper oils found on the market often contain silicone, which clogs the pores and makes everything worse. EVERYTHING. I’m slightly exaggerating here, but it won’t do any good for your beard, and especially not for your skin.
Another product which can exacerbate your skin issues is hair shampoo. Conventional shampoos contain sulfate, a type of salt used to break down silicone found in hair conditioners. Needless to say, facial hair doesn’t react too well to that and will be more brittle, dry, and you’ll have more split-ends.
Instead of using hair shampoos, you should consider buying a beard shampoo made without sulfate and that has a neutral pH. Your facial skin is the most sensitive skin on the human body, hence why it reacts to conventional hair products.
How to fight beard itch?
The best way we’ve found to eliminate beard itch is by applying what we call the Brave Routine. It’s a series of steps you have to apply every day that will greatly help with the uncomfortable feeling.
Exfoliate: Five minutes before the shower, use the boar bristle beard brush to remove all the dead skin cells lodged in your beard, which will allow you to clean your beard in depth with the beard wash.
Cleanse: Wash your beard with the beard shampoo and leave the lather in your beard for the entirety of your shower.
Hydrate: Five minutes after your shower, and your beard is almost dry (pat dry with a towel or use a hair dry), apply a few drops of beard oil in your hand, rub them together, then reach the skin under your beard and apply the remainder on the outside of your beard.
Brush: Finish it off with a good brushing to redistribute the oils across your whole beard and on the skin.
How to keep beard itch from returning?
Applying the Brave Routine every day helps tremendously to alleviate the itchiness because it will keep your skin and hair well hydrated and nourished. You can skip a day here and there for the shower, but make sure you exfoliate and use beard oil every day.
The reason the itch comes back is because without proper care, the skin will go back to the previous unhealthy state, bringing with it beard dandruff, irritations, dryness, etc.
